Job Description
I wear many different hats (or, should I say, shoes). I juggle finishing up my last year of college, running my blog and my styling company all while basking in the glory of my dream job offer awaiting me in Seattle after graduation (being a buyer for Nordstrom).
Organization Description
Nordstrom is one of the largest department stores in the US and is doing some pretty amazing things at the moment. High style all while obsessing about the customer experience – I love it.
What dress code was given to you when you began the job?
I was given the guidelines of “business casual,” which for a apparel retailer was zero help. A good rule of thumb is to dress slightly dressier than you think and be in layers. For my first day, I had a blazer in my bag just incase I underestimated the formality.
What do you generally wear to work?
Luckily, I can get away with almost anything. Now, that being said, I still like to keep things professional and modest, but with a “Brenna-itized” spin. I live in shirt dresses and “polish pieces” (the final layer that gives it some posh). Lipstick makes everything better, that is a given. A black track pant is a refreshing and more stylish version of a black work pant.
Where do you like to shop for work attire?
I really love ASOS for unexpected pieces like tailored jumpsuits and great day dresses. I’m obsessing over the edgier direction of Ann Taylor at the moment also. Express has some really great basics like blouses and leather jackets.
How have you developed your professional style?
I am a naturally dressy person. I love heels and skirts. So not so surprisingly, the transition from college fashionista to corporate chic was pretty natural. I bought some key pieces that speak to both my aesthetic and a corporate atmosphere simultaneously. For example, leather jackets, a black track pant, a pop-of-color blazer and metallic heels are my go-to’s.
In your specific office, what is one thing you would tell a woman to definitely NOT wear?
Anything that makes you feel insecure. Your clothes should help assert your power, not take it away. Whether it’s a questionably short hemline you are mentally cringing over or heels you can’t walk in.
What is the best “dress code” advice you have ever received?
When in doubt, keep with the classics. A perfectly-fitting pencil skirt, blouse and necklace should suffice for just about any occasion – and keep flats in your bag! I am always mad-dashing around the Seattle streets for mandatory Starbuck’s runs or walking to a meeting. A dressy pointy toe flat is your friend (my favorites are a silver metallic Sam Edelman D’Orsay flat).
What advice would you give to women starting in her career about dressing for her job?
Invest in pieces that give you style without sacrificing professionalism. For me, a vintage Chanel brooch and dreamy heels were a must. Also, find a great tailor! Nipping in the waist of your favorite pencil skirt will make a $40 Express skirt look like Theory. Find the basics like a black blazer, but find stand out details that speak to you… like a boyfriend fit or leather piping.

The days of black work pant monogamy are done-zo in almost every kind of work setting. Opt to be brilliant and not give up your personality for professionalism. Play with colors and accessories and always carry a delectable handbag.
