Two weeks ago I shared Nordstrom’s September Pop-In which celebrated products that gave back and supported local artisans. That discovery led me down a rabbit hole of sorts where I discovered Treasure&Bond, Nordstrom’s philanthropic clothing line!
A quick background:
Treasure&Bond offers updated and reworked favorites at great prices—think washed denim, soft plaid shirts, your favorite tees and well-worked-in moto jackets. Even better than that? Treasure&Bond enables fashion-savvy customers to give back with every purchase. Five percent of the net profits from sales of Treasure&Bond merchandise will always go to a nonprofit organization that’s empowering women and girls. So customers get great clothing at an incredible value and help support great community-focused organizations!– Nordstrom.com
I reached out to Nordstrom and was able to interview a Nordstrom’s spokesperson about the partnership so I could share more about it with you here!
Out of all of the different lines at Nordstrom, why was Treasure&Bond chosen?
Nordstrom has a long-standing commitment to giving back to the communities we serve and we know that our customers feel the same way. In fact, we’ve heard from many of our customers that they’re interested in finding new ways to contribute to something greater when they shop.
So when we started creating this new brand, we thought a lot about the customers who would love this lived-in, vintage look and the things that inspire and motivate them. Words like confident and authentic came to mind, which led us to the idea of giving back – the most authentic thing we can do to help others. We wanted the brand to support a cause that would resonate with Treasure&Bond customers (primarily young women), and the idea of empowering women and girls was a natural fit.
Our Treasure&Bond brand was inspired by and carries on the legacy of treasure & bond, the Nordstrom philanthropic store that was based in New York City and gave more than $200,000 to local charities over the course of its two years in business.
How long has the Treasure&Bond line been at Nordstrom?
We officially launched the brand this summer.
Why was Girls Inc. chosen as the beneficiary?
We’re so excited we got to launch the new line with Girls Inc. as our first beneficiary. Girls Inc. really aligned with our goal to make the line about empowering young women and girls. They provide more than 138,000 girls across the U.S. and Canada with life-changing experiences and real solutions to the unique issues they face each day.
How often will the beneficiary change (if it will change)?
Girls Inc. will be our beneficiary through the end of the year and we’ll announce a new beneficiary in January.
Are Nordstrom employees currently engaging in any other partnerships or volunteer with Girls Inc?
We’ve supported Girls Inc. for a number of years through our contributions program.
As a Nordstrom employee, what makes you excited about Treasure&Bond?
Treasure&Bond is really just another way for us to extend our commitment to giving back to the communities we serve and we’re excited to be able to offer this kind of product to our customers, who we know are looking for meaningful products that make a difference. We’ve been humbled by the positive response and feedback that we’ve received.
What past philanthropic groups has Nordstrom engaged with?
In 2014, we provided cash grants to 475 nonprofit organizations in the states where we do business. You can see a full list of those organizations on our website: Nordstrom Cares.com. Our largest corporate gift is to United Way. In 2013, we partnered with our employees to give $7.6 million to United Way.
Through sales of MAC VIVA GLAM lipgloss and lipglass, we donated $1.1M to HIV/AIDS organizations in 2013 – – $11.9M since 1997.
Since 2010, we’ve partnered with the nonprofit organization Shoes That Fit to give new athletic shoes to kids in need. We’ve given 43,700 since then and in 2014, we’re hoping to give 15,000 more.
We also have a Nordstrom Scholarship program that awards $10,000 college scholarships to 80 outstanding high school students across the country.
How do you see this partnership evolving in the future?
We’ve been really pleased with the feedback we’ve gotten from our customers and are looking at ways we can continue to strengthen the brand. We don’t have anything concrete to share right now, but will keep you posted once we do!
