Sunday Book Club: My Favorite Young Adult Novels

On a post a few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had a lot of books I was excited for, including a good amount of young adult novels. Briana asked for some recommendations, so I thought now might be a fun time to share some of my favorite young adult novels.

I actually really love YA books. Maybe it’s because they make me thankful about the fact that I’m not in high school anymore. Actually, I love how honest the main characters are. Below are some of my favorite YA books and series from when I was growing up and a few that I’ve read more recently.

This was hands down one of my favorite series when I was in high school. It was full of angst and longing, just as you expect a young adult novel to be. This series follows Jessica through high school and then college as she deals with following her interests and deals with Marcus Flutie.

I read this entire book in one sitting, it was that good. This book centers around Lara Jean and trying to figure out what to do when she realizes that all of the letters that she wrote to boys that she had crushes on were mailed out to them. Get ready to fall in love with Lara Jean (plus, there’s a sequel!).

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Rowell writes a lot of amazing books but this one might have been my favorite. If you’ve read anything else by her, then this one is a no brainer. If you haven’t read a novel by her before, this is the place to start. 

This was another author that I grew up loving. I’ve honestly read her entire catalog, but this one might have been my favorite. It was probably because I related a little too much to a high school overachiever. One of the other things I love about her novels is that there are full of easter eggs to her other novels. As you continue to make your way through her catalog, you’ll start to pick up on them and it’s pretty wonderful.

Fearless by Francine Pascal
This series is so bad, it’s good. Gaia was born without the fear gene, is trained martial arts, and is basically a genius. Oh, and she also likes to stalk around parks in New York to beat up criminals. So clearly she finds herself dealing with spies, potential terrorists, and the FBI. It’s a little like Quantico, if your family was a lot more messed up.

I’ve mentioned on here before (I think), but I love stories based off of fairy tales. It starts with Cinder, a cyborg Cinderella. I know, I know, it sounds weird, but trust me, this series is awesome.

A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird, #1) by Claudia Gray 
This book started a little weird, but I was all in by the time I got half way through. Have you ever wondered about how every little decision changes your life and what would happen if you made a different decision? This novel plays with that idea and what would happen if you could jump through those different branches. 

Ever wonder what happened to the descendants of Sherlock and Watson? Are their descendants still friends? Are they two high school students who became friends and solve crimes together? Don’t care? Maybe don’t read this book. Like crime novels that aren’t terrifying? Try this one.

I honestly didn’t think I would really be interested in steampunk series, but I kind of loved this one. A spy school disguised as a finishing schools for young ladies? Yes please!

If The Bachelor and The Hunger Games had a baby, it would be this series. If you loved either of those things, read this book. If you hated either of those things, read this book. Either way, read this series. It’s so bad, it’s really really good.
