The Summer to Fall Transition For Your Work Wardrobe

Sorry this post is coming at you a little later than normal today. I was planning on working on it on Sunday, but like all of the best plans that went away. I woke up with a bad migraine on Sunday and being able to put full sentences together just wasn’t going to happen.

On top of that, my body and wardrobe is having the hardest time with this weird summer to fall transition. Even weirder that I’m writing about it in the middle of October, right?

By now, we should be clearly into Fall, but yesterday in DC it was 80 degrees, hot, humid, rainy, and super muggy. Everything you could dream of in the fall, right?

It’s made getting dressed for work even weirder.

The mornings will start off chilly, so I’ll have all the layers on (even a jacket)! But by mid-afternoon, we’re back into the high 70s or low 80s, so all of those layers disappear again. It’s just confusing. Add into that that I just want to wear my fall clothing….it’s just weird.

So how am I surviving (and dressing for) this super weird Summer to Fall transition?

First, I have pulled out all of my fall pieces.

Just because it’s 80 degrees doesn’t mean I can’t wear the colors that I want to wear, right? We’ve also gotten hit by quite a few chilly days already, so I have needed these pieces regardless.

Second, I pair my neutral lighter pieces with my fall pieces.

I mean this in two ways. First, I mean lighter fabrics with heavier fabrics. I also mean lighter colors with darker, fall-ish colors. For example, my white, lighter weight tank with a fall colored cardigan. Plaid pants with open toed flats. Light weight sweaters with skirts (and no tights). Ankle boots with no tights. It’s time to get creative. I have a few more examples of this coming up in the next week or so, so you can see what I mean.

Third, layer, layer, layer.

Okay, maybe not three layers, it’s not that cold yet. But wear pieces that you could easily take off a layer and it’ll still look good. Like this outfit for instance. If it gets too hot, I can easily take off the cardigan and be just as happy. In the morning for work, I’ll also throw on a lighter jacket for that extra layer of warmth.

I’ve been following these three rules for the last few weeks and it’s made getting ready in the mornings significantly easier. Though the transition from Summer to Fall has been a weird one, my wardrobe hasn’t suffered at all. In fact, I think I’ve enjoyed some of my outfit combinations the most this fall. I have a few more outfits based around the three rules above coming up in the next few weeks and I can’t wait to share them with you here!

Like my plaid pants? Get yourself a similar pair!
