Growing up I hated turtlenecks. Once I was allowed to pick out my own clothes, they were one of the first things to get dropped from the list (along with anything that had a ruffled collar). I just felt like my neck was being squeezed it and would never be let out.

At some point two years ago, that started to change. I think it was when funnel necks started to come back. I found myself reaching for funnel neck sweaters, because I liked how cozy they were. It felt like a built in scarf with your sweater. Next thing I knew, started to reach for sweaters where the funnel neck was getting higher and higher. Maybe even to wear it was a loose turtleneck? I started to admit, okay, maybe I like turtleneck sweaters, kind of, but not really.
Then I bought a regular turtleneck top.
It only happened there was this really cold morning and I thought, “you know, if I just wore a turtleneck under my funnel neck sweater, imagine how much warmer I would be…”
I want to say I dipped my toe in the water from there, but I completely fell into the deep end. I started to love the idea of turtlenecks as a layering piece. Especially how my striped turtleneck looked under sweaters. I especially loved how black turtlenecks just looked by themselves. I went from feeling like my neck was suffocating to just kind of enjoying the extra layer of warmth.
My favorites have been the J.Crew tissue turtlenecks. They’re pretty thin, but they come in so many colors and they go on sale fairly often. I don’t remember if I don’t this striped turtleneck from J.Crew or J.Crew Factory, but love it all the same! Plus, they come in and out of stock fairly often. So if it’s out of stock now, keep an eye on it so you can snatch it up once it’s back.
Did I just write a 300 word ode to turtlenecks? Yes, I did. Did I mean every word of it? You bet I did.
