Sunday Book Club: September 2019 Reading List

Books, books, books. There are so many books I want to read right now and not enough time. I’d say it’s simply not fair, but truthfully, I could probably re-arrange some things and have some more time to read. I would probably have to learn how to speed read too.

September 2019 Reading List

The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth

This book started out kind of slow and I didn’t know if I was going to keep going with it. Luckily, I was listening to it on audio and I decided to let it keep going. It definitely paid off. By the ending I was hooked and so curious how everything was going to play out. The payoff was completely worth it. I will say though, if you’re a hardcore thriller lover, skip over this one, it’s pretty thriller-light.

The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee

I loved this book! I never new about the history of the Chinese in the South in the late 1800s, so it was fascinating to learn about through this novel. The main character, Jo, was so likable and her story in this book is so interesting. Even if you don’t like young adult, you should definitely give this one a read.

Ten Cents a Dance by Christine Fletcher

Janssen suggested this one as a good follow up for anyone who loved The Downstairs Girl, so of course I had to pick it up. I feel so so about this one. I didn’t love it and almost stopped reading it part way through. But I trust Janssen, so I kept going. I really enjoyed it at the end and getting to learn the historical basis of the book. However, I don’t know if I would recommend the book.

The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory

Is it weird that out of Jasmine Guillory’s three books, this one might be my favorite? Like her other books, this one is featured around two minor characters from the first book, Theo and Maddie. They absolutely hate each other, so of course that means they start hooking up. The results? A hot mess and an excellent story.

Three Women by Lisa Taddeo

Everyone seemed to absolutely love this book, but I think I was just meh on it. I thought the idea of it was interesting, telling the stories of different women’s sexual experiences. But, maybe I wanted more stories…or different stories? I thought one of the stories was fascinating, but I didn’t care enough about the other two. Could I recommend this book? I don’t know.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman

I loved this book! It’s such a good book for a bookish person or an introvert. I could go into detail about the plot, but really, just go read it, it’s such a cute book.

Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand

Hilderbrand does it again! This time though, we’re in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in 1969, in the middle of the Vietnam war. A family is torn up across the two islands. The book felt a little more intense than some of her other ones, but I think that may have been because of the son in the war. Do I recommend this though? Yes!

Stalking Jack the Ripper, Hunting Prince Dracula, & Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

I reviewed the first of these books on instagram, but in case you missed it, I love these books. I really didn’t expect to like them and I think I only picked up the first one because I kept hearing the series was good. But I’m glad I finally picked it up though because the series is good! The main character is a girl who has decided to ignore the rules of society and instead of being a “proper lady”, study cadavers.

So these books focus on Audrey Rose as she helps to hunt down some of history’s famous killers through her study of cadavers. Isn’t that cool? Audrey Rose is a pretty kickass character as well.

Symptoms of a Heartbreak by Sona Charaipotra

This was such a cute book. Imagine a 16-year-old genius on her first day of her doctor’s residency. Oh, and her mom is a doctor at that hospital. Oh, and she kind of has a think for one of the teenage patients. Being a teen genius is hard.

That’s all for my September 2019 Reading List. I can’t wait for next week when I share my favorite Fall 2019 releases with you!
