Do Something Good
You’ve probably seen the old scientist barbie, right? You knew she was a scientist because she had a lab coat and glasses. But she was also wearing heels, which no scientist would ever wear in a lab. Also, what if she was a field scientist? Really, so many questions.
Nalini Nadkarni wasn’t happy with those options though. As a forest ecologist at the University of Utah who has been studying rainforest canopies, she found herself at a loss when her 6-year-old daughter asked for a Barbie. So she re-fashioned Barbie herself and gave the now scientist-explorer Barbie rubber boots. She offered the idea to Mattel, but since they weren’t interested, she started selling her “Tree Top Barbie” at cost on her own website.
Fast forward to last year, Mattel began working with National Geographic to create a NEW line of Scientist Barbies. Nadkarni already had a relationship with National Geographic, so they reached out to her to join the team to advise the team in making the line of dolls. You can actually get the Scientist Barbies now at places like Target!
As a thank you, Mattel also sent a scientist Barbie to Nadkarni designed to look just like her, rope, binoculars, smudge-proof notebook and all!
On Something Good
- My January budget had a lot of black and white, and I’m totally okay with it.
- A little leopard always makes an outfit better.
- Shopping reviews are back and I had some work clothes I needed to review!
This Week’s Reads
Around the web
- I have so many issues with The Crown ending after season 5.
- Musical movie news: I had no idea Lin Manuel Miranda was making “tick tick BOOM” into a movie, but I’m not angry about it. I’m also pretty happy that they’ll just use original cast performance recordings for the Hamilton movie! (Whenever that actually happens.)
- Some great tips for managing your budget when you make less than $60K
- My mind is blown by this. Not everyone has a running internal dialogue??
- Just another reason to love Chrissy Teigen.
- I have mixed feelings about Brad Pitt, but him wearing a nametag at an Oscars brunch is just so pure.
