In the last few years I’ve gone from barely traveling to having a full months of traveling back and forth.
It was a bit ridiculous in the beginning (aka I was repeatedly ill prepared). I felt like I always over packed or had the wrong thing. Then I would always carry around a suitcase that was heavier than it needed to be.
Over the last year or so, I’ve gotten significantly better at traveling.
Really, I had no choice, my shoulders basically demanded that I needed to be.
I’ve slimmed down my backpack that I carry on to a plane with me. Tomorrow I’ll show you how I’ve started packing my suitcase. But today, we’re going to focus on my perfect travel outfit.
Abercrombie Cardigan (Similar) / Madewell Tee / AEO Denim / Target Moto Boot (Similar) / Away Bigger Carry-On (My color is no longer available, but they have a similar pink + Get $20 off!)

My travel outfit is super simple: jeans, a tee, a cardigan, and shoes you can easily get on and off.
Ta da! Okay, we’re done, post over.
Alright, not really. Though my outfit is simple, I did actually put thought into it as it slowly got built. First the jeans, or more specifically, jeggings. They totally got a bad rap when they first came out, but now I kind of love them. They’ve got a little extra stretch to them, so they’re comfortable like leggings, but you still look more put together than leggings. In the summer I like to do ripped denim because odds are where ever I’m arriving will be warm, so ripped denim helps a little with that. In the winter though? No holes in my pants, thank you!
The tee cardigan combo came because I’m all about the layering. Some people like their big sweaters, but I prefer cardigans because they’re easier to take on and off when you’re running around. If it’s super cold, this is also where you would add in the giant warm scarf.
Finally, the shoes. This is a weird one. I always try to wear my bulkiest shoes on the plane to save space in my luggage. Luckily for me, that also tends to be the shoes that slide on and off. In the summer, I rarely have anything bulky, so I’ll go for a pair of flats or tennis shoes. In the winter though, go for the boots. Just make sure that they don’t take forever to take on and off.
Also, I would say that it’s just good form to try to avoid sandals. Why? Well, logically if you have to chase down a plane, that won’t go well in flip flops. Second, if you don’t have TSA pre-check (which you need to get), you’re going to have to take off your shoes to get through security. Bare feet on the airport floor. Third, it’s cold on the plane. Cold feet aren’t good. Finally, feet in general. Ugh. Be kind to your fellow passengers.
So that’s how I’ve built my perfect travel outfit. Check back tomorrow for tips about packing your carry on suitcase!
