Why I’ve Started Paying More For My Beauty Products

Look at me, a few months ago I was telling you guys that I was starting at zero when it comes to beauty knowledge and now I’m talking about paying more for beauty! Now, I’m definitely NOT an expert (at all), but I’ve learned a few things in the last few months and it’s really changed my mindset. It’s also changed my buying habits.

So let’s talk about that mindset change.

Why Have I Started Paying More For My Beauty Products?

Clean Beauty isn’t Cheap Right Now

I’m going to be completely frank with you, clean beauty isn’t as inexpensive to produce as other mass market beauty products. A lot more care and regulation goes into the products which can cause the final product price to be a little higher. So if I want to switch to products that are better for me, I’ve had to accept that I’m going to spend a little more money than I would have in the past.

Now, this isn’t to say that there aren’t great products available at a lower cost (Yes To is a great brand to start with). However, until the clean beauty movement becomes more mainstream, it will still stay fairly expensive to produce clean beauty products

Better Quality Ingredients Are Important For My Entire Body

I’ll be honest, I didn’t fully comprehend the chemicals in these products are bad for you thing until I started learning more about clean beauty. I understood that there were chemicals in all of my personal care products (of course), but I assumed that like everything else in my life, it was all regulated, so I was probably fine.

But it didn’t really sink in for me until I started writing my post about sunscreen and the chemicals within sunscreen. It was then that I started to realize how the ingredients used for just one product could actually negatively effect my entire body. I might be trying to product my skin, but by doing so end up poisoning my reproductive organs.

This actually made me afraid to start looking at the ingredients in my other beauty products. If this was just one ingredient on something as important as sunscreen, what other chemicals were lurking in my other beauty products?

No One Else is Regulating My Beauty Products

Which leads me to this point. If you live in the United States, your personal care products aren’t getting the regulation from the FDA that they need. So until that changes, I need to be the person regulating what goes on my skin. Which may mean that it’s something more expensive, but it also means that it will be the safe option for my skin.

In case you’re curious though, Beautycounter is currently advocating for changes to be made in how the FDA regulates personal care products and they’re making amazing strides! Learn more about their advocacy here and read about their bill that’s been recently introduced in the senate!

I Only Get One Skin

Your skin isn’t some pair of shoes or a bad date. Aka you don’t get a second chance with your skin. There’s no do-overs here. You either treat it really well the first time or that’s it. It was actually Jess, from The Golden Girl who said this to me once and it’s stuck with me. If I get one chance to treat my skin well, I better do it.

How Have I Made This Mindset Change Work With My Budget?

Okay, so yes I’ve made this mindset change, but has my budget really changed? Well, uh, not really. So how have I made accommodations for it?

Only Replace the Empties

This is my first big one. I’m only replacing products when I run out of what I currently have. That way not only am I not ending up with multiple products crowding my counter, but I’m not over spending. For instance, when I ran out of my make up remover, I looked for a clean equivalent. And surprise, I found my new favorite at Beautycounter. My tinted moisturizer was all set, but I replaced my lipstick.

I’m Not Replacing Every Product….Yet

I will admit, I haven’t replaced everything and I’m not sure if I will. The current mascara that I use is $7 and is the ONLY mascara that I’ve found that does not run no matter what. It just works so well, that I don’t know if it’s worth changing. The same goes for my eyeliner and a good eyeliner is hard to find. I may one day branch out, but for now, I’m fairly set with those two products.

Take Advantage of Discount Programs

The other things I’ve done is take advantage of discount programs. With Bareminerals, I’ll mostly wait until I get notice about any discounts or promotions. Then I’ll grab anything I’m about to run out of. For Beautycounter, since becoming a consultant, I’ve been able to learn about and take advantage of new offers. I’ve also learned about their great membership program, Band of Beauty. For $29, you basically get discounts and freebies offered to you for a full year. It’s a really good deal for anyone who’s been interested in trying out clean beauty.

The Mindset Change Isn’t Done

My mindset change isn’t completely done. I still always want to look for the cheapest option and it’s hard to not resist that $3 bottle of whatever at CVS. But remembering that I’m doing this to help my body in the long run is really help push me in the right direction.
