While I was on a blogging hiatus, I was sharing mini versions of my book reviews on Instagram. But I miss diving into longer reviews on here and being able to cover more books. For my first review back, I had to cover the newest release by an author that I absolutely adore, Laura Hankin.
One-Star Romance by Laura Hankin
TWO SENTENCE SUMMARY
Natalie is shocked when she realizes that the man (Rob) she has to walk down the aisle with at her best friend’s wedding gave her book a one-star review. Over the following ten years, Natalie and Rob continue to run into each other and grapple with their feelings of frustration and admiration for each other.
Fun fact: Laura got the idea for this book after this actually happened to her! She didn’t fall in love with the guy, but after she shared this story online, everyone told her that she needed to turn it into a book.
WHAT I LIKED MOST AND WHAT FRUSTRATED ME
What I liked most about this book was…well…everything. I had a hard time putting this novel down. Hankin is incredible at creating characters who you just want to hang out with more. I was a little nervous about the pacing of the novel would go since it takes place over ten years, but I worried for nothing. The story flowed well and the time jumps eased from one to the next. I also loved how Hankin talked about the writing process, but didn’t romanticize it. She gave a realistic description of how writers work and the pitfalls that can come with it.
What frustrated me the most was that I couldn’t hang out with the characters a little bit longer. Honestly, give me another book or let me live in this world a little bit longer. Or give me a book from Angus’s point of view.
RECOMMENDED FOR
Fans of Katherine Center! One-Star Romance has the perfect balance of rom-com and pulling at your heart strings. It reminds me a lot of some of Katherine Center’s latest books: The Rom-Commers (a review for this is coming soon!), The Bodyguard, and Hello Stranger.

BACKLIST BUMP
One of the things I like the most about Hankin’s books is that they are all so different, but equally excellent. Her past novels include The Daydreams, Happy and You Know It, and A Special Place for Women.
