This was a fun mix of books. There was no rhyme or reason to what I read. It was really just how books came out, when they arrived to my library holds list, and what I was in the mood for.
November 2019 Reading List
The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Karen White, and Lauren Willig
I’ve been off of Beatriz William books for a while, they just haven’t been as good as they use to be. But this one? Oh my gosh, it was so good (the two other authors probably helped). It really reminded me of Fiona Davis novels, with how the books went back and forth between the past and present day. I highly recommend it.
Do You Mind If I Cancel? by Gary Janetti
If you haven’t heard of Gary Janetti before, you actually probably have. He was one of the writers on the original Will and Grace and his instagram is the birth place of the infamous Prince George clapbacks. This book is filled with stories from growing up and his hilarious takes on his life. It’s so funny and having him read it is even better.
Permanent Record by Mary H.K. Choi
I loved Choi’s last book, so I was hoping this one would be just as good. Luckily, it was! This YA novel is about the miscommunications that begin to occur when a popstar comes into a convenience store one night and completely charms Pablo. An 18 year old who is currently up to his ears in credit card debit. As they begin a whirlwind romance, Pablo realizes that he can’t keep living two lives.
What Happens in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand
The sequel to Winter in Paradise, this book picks about a week or two after the family has returned home to Iowa and is still trying to cope with everything that happened in the Caribbean. Only to end up going back to the Caribbean a week later. We also get to learn more about the father’s past, thanks to a discovered diary.
Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev
Other amazing Pride and Prejudice adaptation! This one takes place in California and revolves around a family who immigrated to America. Now, one of their older daughters is trying to embark on what may be one of her most important surgeries yet. Except her family only cares about her brother running for governor, her college enemy is back in town, and her patient’s brother (and only family) has been nothing but rude to her. If you love these adaptations, this one should be next on your list.
The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
If you were a fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, this follow up should definitely be on your list. However, it’s not a standalone. It is a great follow up. The Testaments provides a good amount of background information on the first book. It also is great to learn what happened after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. Will it be as revolutionary? Ehhh no. Is it still worth reading? I’d say yes.
Another book Janssen told me to read because of my love for The Downstairs Girl. This one was good and I would probably recommend it, but it wasn’t the best of the bunch.
The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
This book definitely had a slow build. I spent the first chunk of it thinking “this is it?” Then it led to what is this book? The obvious finale of “OH MY GOD.” So it was definitely one of those thrillers where it paid off in the end. Until it got to that point, I couldn’t figure out where it was going.
Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory
This book was so stinking cute. I don’t know what is it about older people falling in love, but gosh it was cute. Except for the sex scenes because I don’t want to think about my mother or grandmother having sex. Luckily, there weren’t too many of them.
