No Peonies were harmed in the making of this post.

Peonies. The spring time obsession of the blogger world. Let’s talk about them for a minute, yes?

So everyone has been talking about them and how wonderful they smell and how pretty they are. I can’t object to any of those things, but I just can’t get into them. I couldn’t figure out why, but the other day it finally clicked.
But to explain, you need a little bit of background. When I was growing up, there were these HUGE flower bushes next to my driveway. Every year they sprouted up and took over that side of the grass and some of the driveway. They were goregous, I won’t deny that, but they were also attracted ants like there was no tomorrow. My sister and I would never pick them because there were too many ants. We couldn’t bring them into the house because (you guessed it), there were too many ants.
If you haven’t guessed by now, these flowers? Peonies. The pretty, lovely smelling, ant infested flowers.
The reason I instinctively move away from peonies when I see them? I’m terrified ants are just going to start crawling out of them. Irrational? Yes. Based on experience though? Yes.

The moral of the story? Don’t buy me peonies. I’ll just stare at them waiting for the ants to crawl out.
