Sunday Book Club: June 2020 Reading List

Yes, it’s passed the middle of June and I’m just now getting my June 2020 reading list up. But this month kind of got away from me. I wasn’t really expecting it, but hey, it happens. Right? Either way, I got it done eventually!

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

I really enjoyed this book, it was a fun and light romance read. Except I really could have done without the overuse of the nickname “baby girl”. It was such an annoying nickname. Maybe that’s just me though?

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez

I didn’t think that this book could live up to the first book in this series (The Friend Zone), but oh my gosh, it was even better. I loved that we still got to see Kristen a lot (from the first book), but this book really dug into Sloan and her life. This really felt like a book I could go back to and re-read.

The Lady of the Rivers by Philippa Gregory

After watching all of the Starz princess series during quarantine, I decided that it was time to re-read/read all of the Philippa Gregory books in this series. This was the first book of the series. I loved that it gave a lot of back story to what happened in the series.

The Seasonaires by Janna King

I almost put down this book a few times, but ultimately I’m glad that I ended up finishing it. Why? I wanted to figure out what the heck was going on! The plot which seemed really surface level, kept having these weird twists and I just wanted to know how it ended! Would I recommend it? I’m not sure. But if you want an entertaining reading, this could be it.

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting

I don’t know if this will be a winner for everyone, but it got me on the romance part and then it pulled at my heart strings in other areas. I think that I really liked that it had a plot line beyond “boy likes girl” and that additional plot line was what really drew me in.

All Your Twisted Secrets by Diana Urban

The entire time I was reading this book, I felt like I had already read it. I don’t know how that’s possible since it just came out, but that didn’t stop me from reading the book. The book took place in the present where everyone was literally stuck inside a room with no idea why, but with the command that someone needed to die for them to be let out. At the same time you get flashbacks to the past where you get to see what lead up to the events of this night and why these high schoolers are stuck in this room. I finished this book in about two sittings because I wanted to know if they got out of the room or not!

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

I don’t know how I missed this Beauty and the Beast adaptation, but I’m so glad I finally found it! It was such a good read and I highly recommend it for any fairy tale lover. The only bad thing is that I hear the sequel isn’t as good, which is a big disappointment.

Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner

I can’t decide if I really enjoyed this book or if I was really meh about it. It’s actually for the same reason too. I like that it’s a little bit of romance, a beach read, a mystery, and a little bit of chick lit. But at the same time, it was just too much. It was really well written, but why did all of that need to be squeezed into one book? I would say give it a chance and form your own opinion.

All For One by Melissa de la Cruz

The final book in Melissa de la Cruz’s book! This was the one I kind of didn’t want to read because it goes over Hamilton’s affair (200+ year old spoiler). She took a really different approach to it than I expected (a much more loving approach) and I really appreciated it. It was very different from what you saw in Hamilton and what you would have read in other history books.

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev

Finally! A sequel to Pride, Prejudice, and other Flavors! Recipe for Persuasion picks up pretty closely to where Pride, Prejudice, and other Flavors left off, only this time we get to hear from Trisha’s friend, Asha, a chef who is trying to keep her father’s restaurant a float. As a last ditch effort, she joins Cooking with the Stars, a reality cooking show that could help put her restaurant back on the map. The characters in this story are just as colorful as the first book and it’s not hard to remember why you love this family. You’re also able to dive even deeper into the history of the Rajes family, which is an invaluable asset to the book. Sonali Dev really nailed this book and I can only hope she’ll write a third!

The Honey-Don’t List by Christina Lauren

This book was an okay one for me. I think I primarily liked it because I enjoyed pretending that main “stars” in the book were based on Chip and Joanna Gaines. (Who knows if they were?) It was a fun read, but there wasn’t much more to it than that.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

How did it take me so long to read this book? I truly have no idea. I’m happy I finally read it though because I loved it! This book was so good and all I really have to say is that if you haven’t read it yet, go read it now!
