Do Something Good

For the last few weeks, I’ve been following the trial of Larry Nassar (the former US Gymnastics Doctor) and the rise of Aly Raisman as a strong and powerful advocate for her fellow gymnasts and their protection. This past week, the judge, Judge Aquilina, allowed anyone who wished to read their testimony again Nassar to come forward and do so. The response was incredible. Over 130 women, each empowered by the previous one, came forward with strong and powerful testimonies about how US Gymnastics hadn’t protected them, but they would no longer be defined by Nassar’s actions.
The testimonies absolutely blew me away (you must watch Aly Raisman’s), but I was even more blew away by Judge Aquilina. She finally gave these girls a voice and the protection that the adults in their life hadn’t before. She allowed them the chance to look the abuser in the eye and say everything that they needed to say. Aguilina opened up the floor to anyone who needed to speak and didn’t stop when that number hit the triple digits. In fact, she just encouraged more women to come forward. This woman is truly a hero and I thank her so much for giving these girls a voice when they previously had none.
