Do Something Good
A LOT of bad came out of the Fyre Festival Fraud/Fiasco/Other Eff words. Like, a lot of bad.
But in the two weeks since the releasing of the two documentaries about it (on Netflix and Hulu), some good has come too. (And no, I don’t mean the articles about Netflix and Hulu going at each other or going full circle and finding out that another scammer scammed the scammer.)
What I’m talking about is the fact that when the internet watched the documentaries, they discovered the injustice that was truly done to the workers from the Exuma Island. These workers worked constantly with the promise of being paid, payment that they ultimately never received. Maryann Rolle was the owner of a restaurant on the island which catered several meals to the festival staff and housed some staff at the hotel. Like many people involved with the festival, Rolle and and her staff was never paid the $134,000 they were owed.
Not wanting to leave her staff unpaid, Maryann chose to pay her employees out of her own savings, ultimately losing $50,000.
Within a week of learning this through the documentary, a GoFundMe was created to help Rolle recoup her loses. At this point, the GoFundMe for Exuma has already raised $185,259. If you want to contribute, had over to their page here! I’m so happy to see that people went to take action so quickly and have already gone above and beyond their goals!
