A moment before getting on stage

Do Good

Something you may not know about me: I basically grew up on stage. I love performing and theater as a kid and spent most of my time outside of school in rehearsals and learning as much as I could about acting (in addition to singing lessons). I still contribute a lot of who I am to those years growing up in a safe environment where I received the opportunity to be myself. That’s why whenever I can find ways to support my theater back home, I do, but I also love finding out about other children’s performing arts programs.

One that was introduced to me recently by a friend (Hi Whitney!) was A Broader Way Foundation. A Broader Way Foundation was created in 2010 by Idina Menzel (yes, that big time Broadway star) and Taye Diggs to give girls from urban communities a creative outlet in arts programs.

Some of the programs that ABW offers includes Camp Broader Way, a fun sleepaway camp that combines regular camp activities with performing arts activities, and school year programming that offers everything from the chance to see Broadway shows to arts classes.

Easiest way you can get involved with ABW? Donate, of course! But if you want to keep it more local, check in with your local children’s theater (trust me, there’s probably one close by) and see if they offer volunteer or donation opportunities. Every child needs a space to creatively express themselves when growing up and theater offers them the perfect opportunity.
