Do Something Good
Getting an ebook from the library is about to become a little bit harder. Why? Well don’t blame the libraries. As of November 1, Macmillian changes with the libraries go into effect.
What changes you ask? The publisher has decided to change the terms of their ebook agreements with libraries. Moving forward, Macmillian will enforce a two month embargo on library ebooks across all of the company’s imprints. What does that mean? Well, if Macmillian publishes an ebook, then you won’t be able to borrow the ebook from library until AT LEAST two months after it’s publisher date (and that’s not including the wait list).
In the grant scheme of things, this makes no sense. As Book Rioter, Kelly Jensen points out,
What makes Macmillan’s changes particularly egregious, though, is that libraries are allowed to purchase no more than one digital edition of a book for the first eight weeks of its publication. The size of the library, as West points out, makes no difference. One ebook is one ebook. After eight weeks, libraries will be able to make additional ebook licenses.

Ebooks for All Petition
So what are Libraries doing to fight back? With support of the American Library Association, libraries have begun alerting their patrons of these new restrictions. They also starting circulating the Ebooks for All Petition, demanding that Macmillian revisit this policy. The petition has already received more than 192,600 signatures.
