Happy Sunday! I thought I would share an easy DIY project with you today.
I’ve had this IKEA desk move with me from apartment to apartment and truthfully, I was kind of sick of looking at it. I was debating looking for a new desk, but I didn’t really want to spend more money. After looking around the internet, I started to come up with ways I could spruce up the table without spending a lot of money.
Tools you’ll need:
X-ACTO Knife (or a regular knife or sharp scissors)
I did this project in two parts: the table legs and the desk.
Table legs:
1. Decide how far up the leg you want to spray paint (I decide on 6 inches) and wrap the painter’s tape around each leg at that point.
2. Take the legs outside and spray paint the bottom part of each leg below the tape. Place the legs upright to let them dry. For drying time, I let the legs dry overnight (I’m always nervous about smudging), but you should be fine after an hour or two.
On to the table!
1. Peel off the backing of the contact paper and lay it over the top of the desk. One of the hardest parts is trying to avoid bubbles in the contact paper when you lay it on the desk. To avoid this, I tried to smooth out the paper as I slowly laid down each section.
My paper wasn’t the full width of the table, so I ended up having to do two rows of paper.
2. Once you’ve laid down the paper, use your x-acto knife to cut off the excess paper. The easiest way to do this is to run the blade along the edge of the table.
3. You don’t have to do this, but I used my let over contact paper to line the sides of the tabletop. I then repeated the process of using the knife to remove excess paper. Adding the contact paper to the side gave it a complete marble look.
4. Once your table legs are dry, remove the painters tape and reattach them to the table!
There you have it, a brand new desk!
