I’ve been waiting for it to get chilly in DC that when the day finally arrived, I almost didn’t believe it. I was in Toronto enjoying 50 degree weather, I came back to DC’s high of 85 (yuck), but then 5 days later, I got my wish: beautiful, chilly weather. So you know what that means right? It’s finally time to pull out all of the best fall sweaters (and maybe add a few favorites).

Different Styles of Sweaters
I’m 100% a sweater person. Cardigan, crew neck, I love them all! Since there are so many different styles, I figured I would go over a few different styles first. The nice thing is, you probably recognize all of them already and know your favorites (or what the best fall sweaters already are).
Cardigan
Personally, I think that cardigans are the perfect sweater for work. Typically, they are considered the best layering sweater because they’re the closest to a jacket. It’s just a jacket that you can easily slide on and off. Cardigans can very though, from the demure Jackie O. cardigan (that stops and the hips and buttons up the front, often seen at J.Crew), to the long flowing open cardigan, to the cozy, almost bathrobe like cardigan. The good news is that there’s one for every occasion.
Crewneck and Scoopneck
The crewneck is pretty straight forward. It’s a fairly fitted sweater (most of the time. The name comes from the fact that the neck of the sweater will be directly around (or flush) with your neck. The scoopneck sweater can be looser and the neckline in turn will also be looser. Also, it can scoop down lower in the front or in the back. Essentially, it’s farther away from your actual neck than a crewneck.
Cable Knit
Okay, I could go all day into the different kinds of knits for sweaters, but I’m going to mention cable knits because it’s my favorite. Basically, a cable knit refers to the pattern that was used to make the sweater. Also, it’s when you’ll see the braid-like patterns up the front of the sweater. In addition, the neckline will often be a crewneck and you’ll see these a lot at stores like LL Bean.
V-Neck
Hopefully this one is pretty self explanatory. A v-neck sweater is when the neckline of your sweater is in the shape of a V. Anddddd I’ve got nothing else to add here.
Turtleneck, Mockneck, and Cowl
When I was growing up, I hated wearing turtlenecks because I felt like I was being choked. Now, I don’t get that feeling as much. However, I do feel like a turtle every time I’m putting it on. Why? We’ll I’m stretching my head through the tiny hole and I feel like a turtle emerging from it’s shell. Do you have the image of a turtleneck in your mind yet? No? Just some really weird image of me? Yeahhh, me too. Basically, a turtleneck is when the neckline goes further up and covers your neck. If it goes most or all of the way up, it’s a turtleneck. If it goes part or only a little bit up, it’s a mock neck. But, if the fabric is super loose and just kind of collects around your neck and front of the sweater, it’s a cowl neck.
What To Wear With Your Sweaters
The nice thing about figuring out what to wear with your sweaters is that the possibilities are endless. With so many types of sweaters, you can really find a perfect sweater for every occasion.
Jeans
I know this is kind of a duh, but don’t discount it! You don’t have to just pair your sweaters with blue jeans. Also, you can always mix it up and pair them with colored jeans. Or maybe high waist jeans with a cropped sweater. As a result, there are so many variations, you can have a lot of fun with it.
Mini Skirts
One of my favorite things about pairing loose sweaters with mini skirts is that they help even each other out. Furthermore, you feel a little more covered up and your skirt ALMOST doesn’t look as short.
Faux Leather Leggings
Absolutely, I love to pull this look out during the winter. For me especially, it’s a little unexpected and it’s a great way to dress your outfit up. In addition, all of the pairs I have are incredibly comfortable, so it’s a great way to still be comfortable while dressing up.
