Inside The Actor’s Beautycounter Review

I’m really excited for today’s post, the actor’s Beautycounter review!. Primarily because I didn’t have to write it. ALSO because it was written by someone who is incredibly important to keeping Something Good running, but you may have not heard of her.

Introducing: Maddie! Maddie is my close friend and the virtual assistant to Something Good! She basically provides support wherever I need it and has gone from zero to 60 in blogging in a year and a half. When she’s not helping me with blogging, Maddie is an actor in Milwaukee (and an amazing one at that).

As an actor, Maddie has a different relationship with makeup and skincare products than most other people. When she has to use make up, she basically has to pile it on so she isn’t washed out by stage lights. Because of that, I thought it would be interesting to have her buy a few Beautycounter products and share her experience using them during her time in the limelight. Or, as I like to call it, an actor’s Beautycounter review.

An Actor’s Beautycounter Review

Hello! Maddie here, to tell you all about my first experience with BeautyCounter. Let me preface this post by saying that, like the ladies over at The Home Edit, I am NOT a beauty blogger/guru/master by any means. Like, not at all. What I really am is a theatre artist based in the Midwest, where I spend a lot of my time pretending to be other people or directing people on how to be other people. When it comes to everyday makeup, I usually go for a natural look…and by “natural,” I mean the minimal amount required to make me look like I got a full night’s sleep. When I do wear a full face of makeup, it’s usually theatre-related, so I want to make sure that what I’m using is a product that I can rely on, is long-lasting, and a product that I feel comfortable wearing.

That being said, I don’t exactly have a large budget when it comes to beauty products. So, when I made my first purchase with Beautycounter, I made sure that I ordered products that I actually needed; I don’t need to add to my growing volume of lip products (they’re just so prettyyyy). At the time of purchase, I knew that I wanted to try a new makeup remover, and that I needed a new setting powder. So, I ended up going with: One-Step Makeup Remover Wipes, Mattifying Powder, and the Brilliant Brow Gel.

Let’s start with the wipes! [Fun fact: one of my family members (who shall remain nameless) apparently thought that they were everyday wipes and proceeded to rip open the packaging and toss it into the trash [Edit from Dana: to clarify, he threw the packaging in the trash, NOT the wipes]. Seriously? Luckily, I had a container that I was able to transfer the wipes to before they started to dry out—phew! Anyway.] The texture at first feels rough and even a little bit dry, which I was concerned about, but they ended up being one of the best facial wipes I’ve ever used. With heavy theatre makeup, once the performance is over, I want to get it off PRONTO and allow my skin to breathe again. These wipes got SO much off; I used them exclusively for two show runs I had over the past couple months, and I still haven’t gone through all 30!

Mattifying Powder

On to the powder! I honestly don’t really have a powder for everyday use, but when it comes to being on stage under harsh lights and wearing heavy, layered costumes? I’m gonna need all the matte-ness I can get. There was some difficulty in actually getting the powder out of the container, and it only dumped a very small amount at a time. But as it turns out, you don’t need a lot! It’s very fine & translucent— which is ideal when you’re using different products and tints for face coverage. 

Usually, I would use rose water or a setting spray as the finishing touch afterwards, but I found that I didn’t need it when I used this Mattifying Powder. In the first show that I tried using just the powder, I was required to do a lot of crying and nose running, but with the Mattifying Powder my “look” stayed in tact.

And finally; the brow gel. Ah, eyebrows. I’ve never been particularly aware of or fond of mine. But boy have they become a popular beauty trend over the past couple of years! (Again: NOT a beauty blogger.) I’m used to applying thick, intense color to my eyebrows using an eyebrow pencil, which is ideal for a look from the depression era or the 40’s, but that’s nooooot exactly what I personally go for. With the wand & brush tip, this gel requires such a minimalist technique to keep the brows looking natural and isn’t too overwhelming in terms of pigment. I ordered “Dark,” and it ended up being a great match for my brunette hair color.

So, there you have it! My take on three of the items that Beautycounter has to offer. (And it has a LOT to offer.) While I don’t think that I’m currently in the budget to purchase more of their products for a while (EDIT from Dana: Maddie, don’t forget you have a $7 credit to use up soon since your a Band of Beauty member), I can now honestly recommend them. They’re quality, they’re long-lasting, and they’re safe. Three things that I can definitely get behind. Am I a beauty guru yet? Maybe?
