I loved audiobooks, but lately my love of audiobooks has gone into overdrive (well, not the app overdrive). Every book I want to try, I first check to see if it’s available in audio. I listen to audiobooks on the way to work, I listen to them when I’m doing work around the house, and I listen to them when I’m doing blog work. It’s just so nice to be able to read books while I’m doing another things. I never have to put my book down. It’s honestly like a dream come true.
I’ve talked in a few posts about how I can’t listen to everything in audiobook form or how there are a few narrators that I can’t stand. But, I realized that I never discussed all of the different ways that you can listen to audiobooks. For me, there are three easy ways to listen to audiobooks that I take advantage of. One is free and two come at really low costs, but I have a way for you to test them out for free!
three easy ways to listen to audiobooks
Libby/Overdrive
Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card. Well, listening to audiobooks also isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card. Libby is a super simple app that you can download to your smart phone and use to get access to your library’s online library department. Even better, you can sign up for a library card and Libby from inside the Libby App.
Libby was created by the company Overdrive, which also has it’s own app to access audiobooks and kindles from your local library. It works along the same general concept, but in my opinion, Libby is much more user friendly. Plus, since I have library cards for DC and Virginia (yay DC/Arlington reciprocity), I can use both of my cards at once within the app.
Audible
If you’re already an Amazon Prime user, Audible is the next logical step to up your reading experience. If you aren’t an Amazon prime user, whatever, you can still love Audible.
Audible is a subscription based service where for $14.99 a month you receive one credit that you can redeem for any audiobook. That may seem like a meh tradeoff, but here’s the cool part: as a member, you’re able to return the book you purchased at any time, no questions asked, and you’ll get that credit back. Yes, even if you’ve finished reading the book. So you can use your credit to read a book, return it, and get a new book. Then repeat. Then the next month you’ll get a second credit to add to the mix.
For the audiobooks, you can play them through the website or through an app on your phone.
Even better, I have a pretty great deal for you right now: if you sign up for Audible using my link, you can try a free trial of audible and get TWO free audiobooks. Then you can just cancel at any point. It’s a pretty sweet offer.
Scribd
I only recently started using Scribd, but I’m a pretty big fan of it so far. Scribd is another subscription based service, but it’s not just for audiobooks. For $14.99 a month, you receive unlimited access to a whole database of ebooks, audiobooks, news articles, sheet music, podcasts, etc. It’s a really long list.
And did I mention it’s unlimited?
I’ve already found and listened to a number of books on there, but unfortunately, I’ve also had to bookmark a number of books on there because they were all set to release in another month (on the same date no less). So a part of me kind of wonders if it’s similar to Netflix where they move things on and off of the platform? I don’t know though, that question is entirely speculation.
For the amount of material on here though, I would 100% suggest giving it a chance. You can use it through the website or your phone’s app. What does signing up with my link get you? Two months of free listening! Think of how many books you could listen to in the that time.
So there’s how I listen to audiobooks.
Do you have another way to listen to audiobooks? Do you still listen to them on 10 cds from the library or cassette tapes (I did that alllll of the time growing up)? And don’t forget to check out some of my other posts about audiobooks!
