It’s October, which means we’re settling in for cozy mysteries and warm drinks….I wish. It’s still hot in DC, so it’s more like mysteries with some iced tea. But let’s go over this October 2018 Reading List.
October 2018 Reading List
Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
Christina Lauren was the duo behind another book that I enjoyed, Roomies. Since that one was pretty fun, I thought this one would be too. And it was! Hazel is super quirky and it’s fun to watch her and Josh develop a relationship. Plus, we can all enjoy a few dirty bits.
Puddin’ by Julie Murphy
Another day, another excellent sequel! The companion novel to Dumplin’, Puddin focuses on Millie, a girl with some high aspirations and Callie, a girl who gets tied up in a bad situation.
They end up getting stuck with each other and have to figure out how to work together.
The Towering Sky by Katharine McGee
The Thousandth Floor Series has finally come to an end! Of the three, this one wasn’t my favorite, but it was nice to have everything actually be tied up.
Sunburn by Laura Lippman
I don’t even remember why I ordered this but it suddenly turned up as an audiobook on my libby shelf, so I started listening. Sunburn follows a woman who abandons her family one day at the beach and we don’t know why. We follow her to a tiny beach community where she sets up a new life. There’s also a stranger who’s following her every move and reporting it back to….someone. It’s a book full of mysteries and reveals at every turn.
Give Me Your Hand by Megan Abbott
Megan Abbott has a tendency to write creepy novels about teenagers and this one is no different. This time? Well, a girl has re-entered our lives and she’s not to be trusted. At all. Especially once someone else turns up dead.
The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis
You already know how I feel about Fiona Davis. My opinion: Just go read it.
Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl
I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about this book. The description for it was kind of confusion and a little too weird. But once I started listening to it, I quickly got into it. I loved hearing from the protagonist and unwinding the small mystery inside the novel.
The Rose & the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh
According to my goodreads, I had read this book already. But when I was rereading it, I’m pretty sure my goodreads was wrong. This was also a sequel, but I think I preferred the first one to this one.
I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo
This was my first dive into Maureen Goo’s novels, and I really enjoyed this one! It was a little immature, but I enjoyed reading it just the same. It’s about a girl who makes a fool of herself every time she tries to talk to a boy. But now she’s finally met a boy who likes her back and she wants to make it work. She decides that the only way to do that is to binge watch a bunch of Korean soap operas and make a list of the guide to getting a boyfriend. It works pretty well, until it definitely doesn’t.
Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson
This book was so much fun! I listened to it on audio and I absolutely loved it! Plus, you can read or listen to it for free if you have Amazon Prime!
99 Days by Katie Cotugno
This was a super quick YA read for me. It was interesting, but I didn’t really love it, so I can’t really say if I would recommend it.
The Incendiaries by R.O. Kwon
I’ve been trying to read some of the big books of the year, but I just couldn’t really get into this one. Maybe because it was so religion focused, while it was also discussing cults. I just couldn’t relate to any part of it, but I wasn’t interested in any other aspect of it really.
Dread Nation by Justina Ireland
I wanted to love this, I really did. I just had so many times when I was able to easily put this book down, walk away from it, and come back later. There just wasn’t as strong of a desire to keep reading. Maybe it was the zombies? But at the same time, I am kind of interested in reading the sequel and finding out what happens to the main characters.
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Okay, finally the last sequel, the last meh. It’s really sad too because I loved Caraval (the first book) and I was hoping this one would be just as magical. It wasn’t really. The book seemed almost evil? I’ll probably just go read Caraval again instead.
