Sunday Book Club: September 2018 Reading List

Fall is here and while I’m excited for all of the upcoming Fall releases (a post on that is coming soon), we have a September 2018 Reading List to go through first! Take a look at my list and let me know what books you’ve read or you’re planning on reading.

September 2018 Reading List

Beartown & Us Against You (Beartown #2) by Fredrik Backman

These books were not only amazing but they made me want to punch things a number of times. Beartown and it’s sequel are full of trigger warnings, but if you’re okay with that, you need to read them. I think they’re important reads and Fredrik Backman is such a beautiful writer. You need his books in your life.

We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union

I’ve been in need of a good celebrity memoir and this was it. Gabrielle Union manages to be funny, but also serious as she takes you through the different experiences throughout her acting career so far. I knew Union from a few of her roles growing up, but I didn’t realize how little I actually knew about her. From all of her activist work, her friendship with Prince, and her work in the arts, she is amazing. This is one of those memoirs you don’t want to miss. I also highly recommend listening to it on audio so you can feel like you’re hanging out with her.

The Last Summer of the Garrett Girls by Jessica Spotswood

This book gave me serious Little Women vibes and I loved it. I gave a little bit more of a review on Instagram, so check it out here!

The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas

Ahhhhh I forgot how hard it is to listen to thrillers on audio. Not because it’s a bad way to listen to them, but because you can’t stop listening! I did not want to put my headphones down. I kept trying to guess or figure out what was going on this book and I kept being wrong. Maybe I just wasn’t trying hard enough, but I certainly enjoyed it.

Ghosted by Rosie Walsh

My boyfriend kept making fun of me while I was describing the premise of the book to him. “Oh man, she’s being ghosted? Maybe he’s just not that interested.” Well, to be fair, that’s what the main character started to wonder too. But nothing seems to add up. The second the main character is ready to believe that he’s just not interested, he pops up again in a really weird way. The book takes you down a crazy winding path of secrets and you’ll want to keep reading to figure out how the heck they actually solve everything!

The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish

I wanted to like this memoir, I really did. But I just didn’t love it. There were definitely a few chapters that I really enjoyed. But overall, it just wasn’t for me.

China Rich Girlfriend & Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan

You know I love the Crazy Rich Asians Trilogy. These were a reread (actually a re-listen) for me. I just wanted more after watching the movie! If you’ve seen the movie, then yes, reading these are a must!

Marriage Vacation by Pauline Turner Brooks

Do you love the tv show Younger? Yes? Then you might recognize the title! Yes, this is the book that Charles’s wife wrote! If you have no idea what I’m talking about that’s totally okay. All you need to know then is that this is a novel ghost written by Jo Piazza (who I love) about a woman who goes through a mid-life crisis in her marriage.

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal

Yes, yes, and yes! This book was so much fun (if you couldn’t tell it was going to be from the title). This is the story of a mid-20’s law school dropout who thinks that she has agreed to teach a creative writing class for some extra money. Until it turns out that the women in her class can’t even read or write English…and they are only interested in writing a certain type of creative stories. I had so much fun listening to this book and I highly recommend it as a great read. It even has an interesting mystery thrown in as well.

All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin

I had actually given up on Emily Giffin novels a while back. It just got to the point where they had become a little predictable. I went into them just wondering who was going to cheat on who and who would divorce who. All We Ever Wanted was like a breath of fresh air from that. It had a much more intriguing plot line that I found myself far more interested in that her earlier books. I couldn’t necessary relate to either characters, but I enjoyed each of the perspectives they brought to the novel. Furthmore, I appreciate that Giffin chose to not take the cookie cutter ending that many would have expected.

The Program by Suzanne Young

Another day, another dystopia. This subject of this one? Depression is a highly contagious disease that must be contained and eradicated. If “symptoms” of it start to appear, then you’re sent off to a hospital where they erase your memories, specifically any friends or previous relationships you were in. This one had an interesting plot with a few twists that I predicted and a few that I didn’t. I didn’t realize that all the books in the series are out though, so I may keep reading through it (if my library will get the other copies).

The Case for Jamie by Brittany Cavallaro

The final book in the Charlotte Holmes trilogy! The second book in the series wasn’t great and I feel like this book made up for that, at least a little bit. It felt like everything was a little more concise, tighter, and to the point. If you’re a fan of the series, I think you’ll be satisfied with the ending as well (don’t worry, that wasn’t a spoiler).
