Color Blocking Fashion

Fashion is a weird thing. (Have I started a post before that way? I feel like I have.) There are so many weird tricks, tips, and oddly enough, names for all of those things. You wouldn’t have even realized it. I mean, we all would have thought it was just putting clothes on our body to cover up. But no. Everything is a concept or an idea. For instance, the woman standing in front of me at Starbucks right now is wearing all shades of gray. So she’s dressed in what we would call monochrome. Did she think about it when she got dressed this morning? I have geninunely no idea. But she could have chosen to wear constrasting colors instead. Or worn florals and stripes, and we would have called it mixed prints. But today we’re going to talk about another color clothing concept: color blocking.

What Is Color Blocking

Color blocking is the concept of wearing multiple solid colors in one outfit. People often prefer to do this by taking complementary colors on the color wheel and then put them together into one outfit.

*If you want to know what a complementary color on a color wheel is, pull up a color wheel. Pick a color and then look at the color directly across from it. That color is it’s complementary color, the color that it looks best with.*

How To Color Block Your Outfits

So if you want to try color blocking now, how should you go about it? Well, personally, I think that in color blocking fashion, there are two main routes: colorful or neutrals (think black, gray, tan, and white).

If you go down the colorful route, that’s when you’ll use the color wheel that I mentioned before. Study the color palatte and figure out the colors you like and what their contrasting colors are. Do you like hot pink? Then a nice green might be something good to pair with it. Stick to complementary colors and keep it to three colors. Maybe four if you’re feeling bold. But always make sure that everything you’re wearing is the same level of brightness, i.e. the same level of intensity.

The black and white route however, is a great route to go if you either aren’t as into color or you want draw attention to a certain area (or away from another). From instance, if you want to slim down your hips, you would aim for lighter colors on top and darker pieces on bottom.

Once you’ve decided which route you want to go when you’re getting dressed, you then get to start the fun part. Do you want to do it yourself and wear separate pieces? Do you want to wear an already designed color block dress? The possibilities are endless, so have fun with it!

Best Color Blocking Fashion

Dresses

These dresses are great because they’re already color blocked for you. You can either find a shoe that matches one of the colors in the dress or you can pick a neutral shoe color.

Color Blocking Separates

For these pieces, I picked all solid, bright colored pieces. You can pair them with each other or go out and find similar pieces to pair with each other.

Color Blocking Shoes

Colorful shoes are one of my favorite ways to add a third color to your outfit. They can also be great for adding a pop of color to your outfit even when you aren’t color blocking.

Do you think you’ll try out color blocking?
