I’m sorry this post is being posted a little late today. I had every intention of working on it last night and then I got hit with one of the worst migraines I’ve had in a while.

The only good side of that? It did give me an idea of what to write about today. I know I’ve mentioned my migraines on here before, but I don’t know how much I’ve actually gone into them (I’ve had them for over seven years). I’m not going to go into my migraine history as much today (though I’m happy to talk about that another time if there’s a request). Today, I want to talk about some of my migraine pain relievers, aka the things I use to make my migraines a little more bearable while I wait for the medicine to work.
But first of course, let me be clear, I am not a medical professional. I am not offering medical advice nor should anything I say here be taken as medical advice. If you need help, consult a doctor.
The other thing I wanted to make clear, I’m not offering cures for migraines today. I promise. First, because there isn’t one. Second, because I really don’t like when people tell me to try their migraine cures. I hate hate hate so much when I mention that I have a migraine or get migraines and someone says xyz thing they do that makes their migraine go away. I know that you have the best of intentions, but trust me, I’ve heard it. (Though, some of the really entertaining ones are still fun to hear.)
Actually, the worst one is when people tell me that when they get a migraine, they just go take a nap and it goes away. I’m sorry, you’re probably the nicest person in the world and you have the best intentions, but when you tell me that, I want to punch you in the face. (If that trick made my migraine go away, don’t you think I would have done it already??)
No, today, I’m sharing with you some my migraine pain relievers I use to make myself a little more comfortable when I have a migraine. Because honestly, right now the only thing that really makes my migraine go away is my prescription medication. But I have found a few things that can make me a little more comfortable while I wait for that to kick in.
My Migraine Pain Relievers
BeKool Strips
I should probably add, my mom has introduced me to some of the best tools I have. The perks of having parents who both get migraines I guess. (Or the downfall because migraines are hereditary. Don’t worry, I still love you both, mom and dad). These strips though are cooling gel strips that stick to your head. I’ll stick one to my head and instantly brings relief to the area that hurts. I’ll generally sleep with a strip on and then take it off when I wake up. If I only use it for a little bit, the strips are reusable too, which is pretty nice. I prefer these to ice packs though because they aren’t as strong as an ice pack, I don’t have to worry about it falling off, and it doesn’t drip water all over me.
Acupressure Pillow and Mat
I’ve found some pretty weird amazon finds lately thanks to The Skinny Confidential, but my favorite has to be this acupressure pillow and mat. I use the pillow whenever my neck feels tight and it instantly helps the blood to start flowing again. My muscles also tend to tense up when I have a migraine, so this helps to loosen them up. You only need to lay on the pillow for 2 or 3 minutes, but I’ll lay on it for 10 to 20 minutes sometimes. I just love how it feels.
Gel Bead Ice Pack
Okay, I know I hated on ice packs earlier, but this one is a great alternative when I run out of BeKool strips. It never fully freezes, so I’m able to pull it out of the freezer and immediately mold it to the back of my neck. I can just pop it back in the freezer when I’m done with it and refreeze it for next time. I’m pretty sure that I can also heat it up, but I haven’t done that yet.
Head Massager
Yup, that $2 head massager that you can buy at CVS? Your new best friend. No, it won’t loosen up any muscles or really help, but it feels good. And when you’re in pain, you just need something to feel a little bit better. Plus, who doesn’t love a mini head massage?
