10 Ways to Cure the Winter Blues

January was ridiculously long and February didn’t seem to be much better. Now we’re headed into March, but the cold weather isn’t fully letting up. We all seem to be working nonstop and all this cold weather can get you into a real funk. After talking to my VA, Maddie, she suggested that we all needed some suggestions for ways to cure the winter blues. I love this idea, so I thought I would share some ideas with you!

Now, before I start, I do want to add that there is a difference between “the winter blues” and actual depression (trust me, I know the difference). The suggestions I have below are just for the winter blues. If you think what you have may be closer to depression, please seek medical help.

Okay, now that I’ve said that, let’s get back to the topic at hand.

10 Ways to Cure the Winter Blues

1. Curl Up with a Book or a Movie

I love nothing more than getting to curl up with a good book and getting to focus my mind on that for a while. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in a completely different world and I love it.

2. Get to Baking

Anyone else out there a stress baker? Or maybe you’re a stress cooker? Well get to it then! Plus, you’ll have the perk of having food to eat when you’re done!

3. Nap with a Gravity Blanket

I’m completely obsessed with my gravity blanket. It’s a weighted blanket that was created to help reduce anxiety and help you sleep better. I sleep with this at night sometimes and I absolutely love it. It’s so comforting and feels like the blanket is giving you one big hug.

4. Indulge with a little at home spa

Nothing makes you feel more fabulous than a little at home spa day. Or if you don’t have time to do a full day, you can just do a face mask. Trust me, a face mask will make you feel fabulous enough. I love this Charcoal mask (I have a handful of friends who love it as well!). I’ve also been told that the Overnight Resurfacing Peel is actually like an at home facial. It’s even cheaper than going to the spa!

5. Get Moving and Exercise

“Exercise gives you endorphins. And endorphins make you happy. And happy people just don’t kill their husbands!” Props to you if you could name that movie before I even got to the second sentence. But the part about endorphins is true. As much as you may dread exercise, it really does wake your body up and give you a burst of happiness. So get moving (and as I said in my exercise post, it’s all about finding something that you enjoy!).

6. Go for a Walk

Okay, if you really don’t feel like doing a full out exercise, then go for a walk! Yes, it might be cold where you are, but throw on some extra layers and don’t make it a super long walk. Just take 10 minutes, walk around the block and clear your head. If you’re a little sleepy, it’ll also wake you up too. (Just for the record, I’m not advising this if it’s below zero. I’m not crazy.)

7. Go to the Movies

Once I signed up with a movie subscription service, I remembered how much I love going to the movies! Settling into the nice dark theater is a great way to take your mind off of whatever is going. You can focus on the movie and give yourself a two hour distraction.

8. Brew a cup of tea (or coffee)

I love holding a warm cup of tea. It’s my favorite way to start a morning or curl up in the afternoon. Just holding the warm cup in my hands makes the day feel better.

9. Make Plans

I’m all about cancelling plans and staying in, but sometimes, you need to do the opposite. Make plans with some of your friends and GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. Whether it’s a coffee date or just hanging out at their house, get out of your own house.

10. Marie Kondo Your Apartment

There’s nothing wrong with starting your spring cleaning a little early. Actually, it’ll be even easier to do your spring cleaning if you start by cleaning out your apartment first. Throw out that clutter, get rid of all of the papers, clothes, and other things taking up space in your life. You’ll feel ten times lighter when you do.
